Will I get to savor the sweet Gardenia Aroma?

I've unearthed another striving beauty! Which I believe I have identified this treasure correctly (finally!). While clearing the area on the side of my home which was once hedges and "monkey grass," I came across a bush of large dead white branches. As I cut them back, I found what I am pretty certain is a thriving Gardenia bush attempting to regrow! it is planted in the rock hard clay with no sign of decent soil or mulch etc. What can I do for this little beauty to be sure that I can watch it grow and bloom?
You can see some of the dead branches of what appeared to be a decent sized Bush.
It's about 5 inches tall.

It does indeed look like a gardenia. They really want acidic soil, so I would mulch with pine straw and use a good slow-release fertilizer for acid-loving plants, like Hollytone.
  • whatever you do do not move it-i find if they like a spot, leave it be. they do love being under oaks (and pines) and need mulched to keep soil fairly moist and not dried out. I have several around here and there wherever i can get room LOL In GA you guys have an abundance of pine needles (that was one thing I found I did not like) once a gardenia establishes itself in the hard clay it will grow. Mine went up to 5' before the last winter killed part of it. Happy gardening! and hope she at least blooms a bloom for you!
