How to replace kitchen light with 17 lb ceiling fan.

We have a 3-light fixture in kitchen and I want a 3-light with ceiling fan. On box it says it weighs 17 lbs and I don't know how to put it up. Hubby has never done one and I am not adept at it either. Recommendations, please. I bought it at Lowes.

I've put up quite a few and always completely assemble it before climbing the ladder. Attach the ceiling mount securely, run the electrical wire, then mount the fan. Make sure the wall switch or circuit breaker is off! Have fun!

If the box lies between joists, you'll need to reinforce it by replacing it with an expandable arm arrangement. My husband put four upstairs in our 1916 house, but I'm including a link to the "new work" version. If you have an older home, I think Lowe's carries one of them as well. There are several support bars that can be purchased from the home centers. Do not rely on the box that is currently in the ceiling supporting the existing light. It may not be sufficient to hold the weight. It may appear to hold it up, but its fastening method is what it lacks. The movement of the fan will loosen the nails holding the box and it will fall. The fan brackets as I said are several. Choose the type that expands when you turn it. It has sharp claws on each end that will be pushed tightly into each joist that is hidden above the ceiling. Once its really tight, you then fasten a u clamp that holds the box into place. once that is done you hang your lamp on that box. This may be a job for a pro if your not comfortable using electrical wiring. Installs most likely will cost more then the fan itself. :(

My thoughts exactly. I wouldn't want to deal with it falling at a wrong time even if is staid up when you install it. I would get on made to hold 25 lbs so you know it will withstand anything.

@Shirley Kalinosky putting up a ceiling fan when you have existing electric is very doable for a home owner it is not something to be afraid to do you can go online and get step by step instructions and lowes can give you free advice also if you decide you can't do it lowes can have someone install it for a charge xx

I have decided that for now I am going to keep the 3 light fixture I have in there. Am going to paint the dark metal with the almond to match the heaters in kitchen and wait until next year and maybe find someone to put an fan in. Thanks to you all for your suggestions. Maybe they will help someone else.
