Polybutylene pipe replacement

Our home was built in 1992 and the builder used Polybutylene pipe. We've had a couple of leaks, one outside - had that one fixed - and recently, one inside. We just need to bite the bullet and have it all replaced before something horrible happens. Can anyone give me a recommendation on a good company to do this? Thanks for the help!

  • Before you do anything. There has been several class action lawsuits on this product. I suggest you obtain the advice of an attorney on this before you do anything to the house. If you have a case, all the work that the job will require most likely will need to be documented. The pipes can be replaced with PEX tubing. This is the material that is replacing copper with great success. As far as a company to do the work. You need to get a good local plumber along with a good general contractor to do the job. Some walls and ceilings will need to be opened up. The contractor can do this properly so the plumber has the access he or she needs to do the work. If the plumber makes the holes, they tend to do this a lot less graceful making it harder for the GC to fix. In any case look up recalls for your pipe and speak to a local attorney for advice on how to proceed.

Thanks for the advice. We've looked into the class action lawsuit and all the money has been gone for years. This will be on our dime. This is our second leak and don't want to worry about further damage. Again, thanks for the heads up.

I had this in my other house and the pipes broke. In the front yard. It was covered by a class action suit

Sherrie, do you know how long ago this was? We checked a couple of years ago and they said the money was gone and no more suits were being paid. Thanks!
