The table has been a family table for a long time and I hate to give it up. We are downsizing and I want to cut it down and use it as kitchen island. Has anyone done something like this that they can share?

cut the table in half (or to desired size). connect the open (cut) end with a 1x 2 on the underside or a slat of the original table. remove and reposition legs from unused end. use remainder of table for shelves, railing ect....

I like Kim's idea but would add baskets to hold storage on the shelf and leave the leaf on the side to screw hooks on to hold pots, utensils, towels or oven mitts! Love your table

A suggestion if you wish to have it closed in on 3 sides...use beadboard! There is a molding made for corners. Then slats should be easy to install by attaching a frame with screws (counter sink screws and they will be behind the beadboard. This will probably be a rather simple task.
