DIY Mason Jar Herb Garden

We love love love cooking with fresh herbs around here! My favorite thing to do is snip the little leaves right from the plants as I'm throwing a meal together. Another love of mine is mason jars...yes, I even have a Pinterest board just for mason jar ideas...so combining the two things seemed only natural. My hubby was the one who came up with the idea to make mini chalkboards to use as the labels(he's so crafty!)..I know, I'm a lucky girl!
Here's what you'll need to put a mason jar herb garden together...

Mason Jar

Wire

Chalkboard Label

Seeds

Dirt

*OPTIONAL*

Rocks/Pebbles for drainage.

Pick seeds like basil, oregano, or thyme. I find these all do well in jars.

I get lots of comments about these jars not being able to drain. But I have found with proper watering they have done just fine. I usually wait to water until the soil has dried out a bit to avoid root rot. You can add pebbles to the jar first to further aid in drainage.

Attach your chalkboard label using wire, fill your jar with dirt (and pebbles) and plant your desired seeds!

I agree that it is a awesome idea but I don't know if we have enough sun to let the herbs grow. Next Spring or Summer maybe a better time for me to try this.
