Planting Asparagus

Finally with our Easy Garden Extension done this spring, we are planting Asparagus. Asparagus is a delicious perennial vegetable that requires it’s own spot to establish and grow. It does take some patience though, because you have to wait to harvest the following year. Hopefully, by next spring, we will be enjoying Asparagus fresh from our backyard garden.
Let me just say that I am a total newbie at this and had a hard time understanding the directions for planting on the back of the package. I am accustomed to digging a hole and putting a plant in. So, I turned to our followers on Facebook for some expert advice. Here is what they taught me:

Be sure and dig the trenches with the mound inside.

Spread the roots on the mound and cover with a couple of inches of soil.

Plant a lot!
I was totally confused, especially when I opened the package and saw what looked like dehydrated Octopus, so getting this advice was really helpful. THANK YOU FACEBOOK FOLLOWERS!
Okay, I am feeling much calmer now that the straw is down. The first row is really doing well, the second row is coming along. I planted it a week or so later. Hopefully, it will catch up.

Did you just plant this asparagus? The generally recommended time is spring, but it looks like yours is doing fine. And I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but you really shouldn't harvest any asparagus the first year after planting.

@Chaotically Creative Co. Cut the asparagus back in late fall and toss around some compost if you have it. I wouldn't blame you if you couldn't resist cutting a little of your asparagus next spring, but try to leave it be and let the plants put most of their energy into crown development.
