Figs - Easy to Grow in the Home Garden

Whether you have a green thumb or a brown one, you can grow figs and have a great reward at the end of the summer.
We live in Tennessee which is a zone 7. Figs are recommended for zone 8 and warmer but even in our coldest winters, this tree has done fine. If you are in a zone 6 or cooler, you can still grow figs in containers and winter them indoors.
I started about 5 years ago with a small one-foot brown turkey fig plant that I purchased from Lowe's. It's now about 9 feet wide and gets bigger each year. Plan ahead when you choose the spot for your fig.
The leaves have a nice fragrance and the figs themselves are delicious. I prefer mine dried but there are many great recipes for fresh figs served with a nice salty meat, like prosciutto.

The one I had in Arizona took six years to fruit and then it wouldn't stop! I had to fight the birds - then put up bird net - to get any. Ate right off the tree. Never made it to the house!! so sweet! I still have a relative in Brooklawn NJ near Cherry Hill. Might visit her this summer. Where is Manchester Township?
