Do's and don't for compost bins

There is a lot of advise regards the things to put in and not to put in compost bins. My question is, do you put eggshells in compost bins?

Yes, you can. Best thing to do is crush them in your fist before adding them as they take a long while to break down. You can also use eggshells in the garden - crushed and sprinkled around plants to stop snails getting to your plants - they don't like the crunchy texture on their smooth bodies. If you throw them in the compost without crushing them up, you will probably find that when you go to use your compost, the shells will still be in evidence. Hope this helps!

I always put my egg shells either in my compost or crushed and sprinkled around my tomatoes to add calcium to the soil.

I put EVERYTHING natural in my compost. I tell my Granddaughters, "if God created it….we can compost it!" So when they aren't sure….I might say…well, did God create that hamburger bun? LOL But it helps them get the idea. No meat, oils, packaged or boxed foods.

Yes , I read recently to put them in the oven that is cooling off from baking, then crush. Great for roses, tomatoes, also sprinkled around plants will keep slugs off, the rough edges hurts them.

Yes. Eggs are a great Calcium booster for vegetables as well as flowers. Dry several out well and powder with a small coffee grinder or food processer That helps them to disperse evenly. Slugs like beer. We don't do alchohol but buy beer just for the garden. A Plastic jar lid with beer is excellent for getting the yucky little beasts. ;)

I put eggshells in mine. I have a blender dedicated to my kitchen compost scraps (I never put meat in mine - causes maggots). I give the scraps a "boost" by grinding the stuff really fine and dump it into a barrel outside beside another barrel with just dirt. After a "dumping" I toss a couple of shovelfuls of dirt on top. Ha. PLUS I get fishing worms!

Get the kids to smash them in to little pieces - they love this! Add them in and your plants will be very grateful. Coffee grounds are great too!

The earth will be so much more complete if you use those egg shells. Might grind them in a blender so they won't attract critters.
