Hardware Store Barn Door

We decided we wanted a barn door to separate our doorless master bathroom, and started researching hardware online. Everything was upwards of hundreds of dollars, and way out of our price range. So my husband got creative and thought, "Why not use a trolley rail?" So we headed down to Lowe's and bought a six foot long trolley rail for about $25, and decided which hanging kit we liked (the hanger with 9 bolts) which cost $30. We built a door out of tongue and groove paneling, stained it blue (my husband has been dying to stain something blue) then later on painted it white (wife wins again!) The entire project (hardware + building our own door) cost $140, which is a fraction of the cost of the fancy hardware! For a full tutorial on how to build your own, you can check out my blog post http://www.killerbdesigns.com/blue-barn-door....

I was looking for an affordable way to do this, too, and found it on your blog! It's bookmarked and/or pinned. We will have to widen a bathroom door to accommodate my wheel chair and this is super cool looking and won't require re-wiring. Taking out the entire door (including framing) will give us just enough inches. Thanks.

i love this idea, and would love to do something similar - only problem is i'm in a rental. does anyone have any ideas how to do this without permanently attaching the rail to the wall? thanks!

this is great! It's exactly what I was thinking of doing to separate my dining room from another room which I call my 'work room'. The opening is a little too wide for a standard size door and I don't want to have a door in the way all the time.

I love that I can see my vision and have something now to show my husband :) You did an incredible job and looks amazing. ...»

I thank you so much for the tutorial which I most definitely will be using '

Bob J, maybe if you showed the pictures to the landlord, he would be agreeable. Years ago, I wanted to paint our ugly paneling in our apartment. After my landlord saw a picture of how great it looked, he said it was OK. People can't picture "different" ideas so a photo might help. Worth a try!

I rent also and I'll be doing it without permission. This can be undone so easily if we move and he wouldn't have to be any wiser. When we first moved here he did ask if we wanted a wall there so I'm pretty sure he'd be agreeable. We never bother him with anything as we fix things around here ourselves and he tells us all the time how much he appreciates us as tenants. I'm so doing this!

I think it would be pretty easy to remove and "hide" as a renter. You just screw 3 or 4 screws into wall studs, which are pretty small holes in the sheetrock. Patch with a little DAP when you're done, and voila! You'd never know it was there ;)

I had no idea L's had this kind of hardware. I know now what we'll be doing for our master suite bathroom door. Thanks for the info Brooke.

The hardware itself was around $70. It's a trolley rail, and Lowe's offers several different styles for the part you attach to your door

Marg, I've seen this type of door made using closet door hardware and then making a cornice type box to cover it. It's made for double sliding doors but once covered you'd never know that. A 72" inch rail is about fifteen dollars. This is for my zipcode, so not sure it will work for you. If not just Google "Lowe's closet door hardware". It's a bi-pass sliding closet door.

You're welcome Marg. I was curious about the price too because I've been trying to convince my hubby to use sliding doors in a couple places in our home. I have given anything had I thought ahead of time to add more pocket doors. We have one for the half bath and they are wonderful!

thanks for all the info. For some reason the contractor building our home thinks this concept is from outter space.

Even the best of contractors seem to think something other than standard is from outer space. If he's a decent guy, and most are, then he'll do what you want. Granted he may charge you more, but if it's more work than what he'd have done otherwise it's worth checking into since it's often easier to do it now than later.
