Can I stain over stained trim?

My parents have this 90s wood trim stained an orangey brown. Some if the trim is damaged and needs to be replaced. I wanted to paint it white but also want to know if it's possible to stain a darker stain over the existing stain color if that's what they decide they prefer.
Damaged trim and wall!

I am painting over 100 year old stain and varnish. I have sanded and primed with an oil based primer. You can then paint with either water or oil-based paint.

The old varnish needs to come off to accept new stain.
  • Yes, you can stain over existing stain. I would simply give it a light sanding just to knock off the sheen and rough up the current stain a little (doesn't have to be perfect) then apply new gel stain right over it in the color you want.

With Jennifer. It always works. But you need to repair the missing spots. That's a bit harder to stain. Have no solid advice. Ask this question.
