    Good question Steve.

    It is not a fire hazard. The electrical is grounded and works on a timer. There is an element that heats the lava rocks to 170 degrees. You can create steam by pouring water on top of the rocks. As with anything electrical you wouldn't let children or adults touch the stones as they will be extremely hot to touch.
