Suggestions needed for my backyard.

This is my backyard. It faces East and gets plenty of sun. It's a new house and I'll plant a tree in the Fall. The rest of the yard is a blank canvas. I edged out part of the yard for a garden, but that's as far as I got before the Texas heat drove me inside. Need ideas so I can be ready to finish once it starts to cool down.

What about a sitting area? Not sure what the burning laws are in Texas but you could add a fire pit in the middle of the sitting area. What does the back area of your house look like? Is there a patio or anything there?

@Gloria Conerly The patio with the bistro table and grill sounds nice. I would bring that seating out into the yard further too. This will use up some of the empty space in the middle of your yard. Create that area around the tree you'll be planting.Once the tree gets bigger it will provide shade. Or build a gazebo for and out the seating are there. :) What about a nice rock garden or a rock border to edge your garden?

You're lucky you have space for a garden, you should see the space I have to work with. Not very big, and it will be for raised beds too. Right now I have it blocked off so my son's dog and my little pom won't go back there and make a mess. Our backyard faces East as well, and my flower bed is in the front so it gets the hot sun in the summer most of the afternoon, but I've been able to save my flowers somehow, so far from the heat and sun.

You are lucky to have a blank slate. Depending on time and budget constraints as to what you will want to do. Remember, all gardening will require upkeep. it is fun to put in an watch it grow, but a pain to keep weeded, watered, fertilized, trimmed, etc. Be sure and plant your trees some distance from the fence so that (1) you do not irritate your neighbors with leaves, limbs, etc. falling into their yard and impeding their property and (2) you get the full benefit from them.

@Jeanette S yes, the blank slate is good because I can do anything I choose. And bad because it is overwhelming. I plan on doing a low maintenance garden of cacti, succulents and flowing grass. I am big on low maintenance! Thanks for responding.

We live in TX, too....our backyard is large! That's one reason we bought this place. For 3 years all we did was now the grass. Then, we had the good fortune to put in a pool~ there's still plenty of room & grass, AND after that drought a few years back, we were lucky to have the pool and less dead grass to replace!. Just a thought...
