Starting a garden

Hi Hometalkers! I've been itching to start a garden, but I find the thought of it to be so daunting. Does anyone have any advice about how to start a garden? I have absolutely no experience, and I really love sunflowers. I would also like to grow some cherry tomatoes and cucumbers. What's the best place to buy seeds?

Living in the North you need to consider the end of the season approaching and plan on just starting with a fall garden this year. I am in the South where we can garden year round so I can't help much with specific plants. You need to go to a local nursery and pick their brains for help. They will have the seeds that will work in your climate for your season. Don't bother with a big box store if you are looking for advice on plants. Late summer and fall offers great flowers besides sunflowers, asters and mums are just two. For vegies, you should be able to plant broccoli, cabbage, chard, onions, etc. But please ask your local experts. I've been in the South for so long now that seasons are just something I put on a steak!

Late summer and fall are a good time to start planning and preparing for a spring garden. If you are planning to till a garden in the spring, cover it in plastic during the winter. Here is a l couple of links to articles on our blog. http://chaoticallycreative.com/2014/06/planting-a-backyard-garden/ http://chaoticallycreative.com/2014/07/easy-garden-extension/ Another option is to do raised beds. This is where you would build a frame out of wood or masonry blocks and fill it with soil. If you build them now, you would be ready for planting in the spring. If you purchase heirloom seed year. There are several companies on line that sell heirloom. We have ordered from Sustainable Seed. Good Luck!

I do not grow edibles...just flowers and pretties. I just have NO luck whatsoever! And I do not have a place for a garden! Good luck to you! (From my memories as a kid working in Mom's BIG garden, it is HARD work! Well worth the effort if it "makes" good..a term for a successful garden crop.)
