Trimming a hydrangea bush?

I have a hydrangea bush that has not bloomed for 9 years. It gets great leaves but no blooms. I have fertilized it cut back the dead wood pieces and still no blooms. What am I doing wrong? I am not sure what variety of hydrangea it is.

  • you live in a colder zone? some hydrangeas do not like cold weather and will need to be protected during those frigid winters up north. I just started growing hydrangeas last year and have found that they do not like to dry out at all. If you want hydrangeas that bloom I would choose the Endless summer line and have found that no matter what you do the beauties will bloom! Knowing what kind it is will also help so post a pic and see if we can help you identify it.

Over the last several years I've bought about 10 Endless summer Hydrangeas, only 2 are blooming...The rest look great, but no blooms, I want blooms! I have fed them regularly, still no bloom, is it too late to expect them to maybe boom this year!
    • @Lorrie B That is strange because i bought my endless summer off the markdown rack barely hanging on a couple months ago and put them in the ground and they are blooming. Is it just this year they did not all bloom? i have a few hydrangeas that did not bloom this year-they are beautiful plants but no blooms and i blame it on the month of frigid temps. I would not give up yet. But many hydrangeas especially the big leaf bloom on old wood so if the winter was harsh then the blooms fizzled in the cold. So I would protect your hydrangeas with extra leaves this fall off the trees to blanket them for next year. good luck and happy gardening.

Have your soil tested! Mine are going crazy this year! Make sure you give them the right food, and water them well!

do you have deer? I do, & they eat the flower buds so I never get flowers.

Some varieties bloom on last year's growth--old wood-- so you may be removing potential buds/blooms. Also, it might be located in too dense shade. Good luck!

It could be trimming like Stacy said above or possibly they are not getting any sun. Are they getting about 4 hours of morning sun? I would cut off a branch with 2 leaves and take it to a landscape/garden center and find out what variety you have and how much sun it needs. The oakleaf variety (which has large leaves similar to an oak tree needs full sun and a lot of the other varieties only need morning sun...One question to try and pin point your hydrangea variety is: Does your hydrangea have brown twig like branches that leaves come back every year? or does it totally rejuvenate itself every year by producing new green stems every year?

I do gardening for a living and we call the endless summer hydrangeas endless bummers because they don't grow back after like 2 seasons
