Caring for Forsythia

Maybe I am worrying for nothing. Last Fall I bought this plant with the understandingthat it was a Forsythia. In the Spring Isaw some yellow branches and since then no blooms. But it has grown so much I despair that it willtake over the whole bed. Should I pruneit to control its growth? I understand, however, that if I were to prune it now, I will not get any blooms next Spring. Or should I move it where it will have morespace to spread its branches?

Forsythia will definitely form a thicket and needs room. If you try to confine it to a small space you will be doing constant battle.
  • For every branch that touches the ground this plant will root and start again. Moving it now or in the fall to a better and bigger location will be your best option-as Douglas states, it will need lost of room. And yes you need to keep this pruned after flowering to control its growth and shape. happy gardening

Every branch will root. If you need a hedge they are good for hay. I have 2 large ones from 50's ( parents planted) that we really keep cleaned up and I have taken a lot from the middle it had been deserted for so long but beautiful in spring When they bloom. (Live in N. E. Tn.)

Douglas & Garden Frog - I was afraid that was going to be the answer. I am just being lazy. I will move it. Thanks for taking the time to answer.

I really love my forsythia, but I am a brutal pruner. Those early blooms make my heart smile. My dad always had one in his yard and called them the harbinger of spring.
