Cleaning tile in the shower

Tina Krenz
by Tina Krenz
I have tile in our shower in the master bath and around the bathtub in the guest bath. I was wondering how to clean the tiles and keep it from getting the soap stains from showing or staying on the tiles? Is there any easy way to do this without ruining the tiles without using harsh chemicals? Thanks.

Mixture of blue dawn, vinegar and water in equal parts. Heat up vinegar then add Dwn, then water.if too thick for your spray bottle use more water. Spray and leave on for a few hours, then rinse. Sparkling clean.

I was also told liquid soaps, as opposed to bar soaps, will lead to less build up. Don't forget about resealing the grout from time to time.

I use the 50/50 mixture of Blue Dawn dishwashing detergent and white vinegar for my fiberglass shower that had a lot of scum. It worked well on it,. Don't know about ceramic tile.

I got one of those curly metal scrubbers and used straight dawn and just scrubbed it off - it came right off and we had a lot of soap residue as well as hard hard water. I've heard that using rain x when dry doesn't allow the soap to stick to the tile. Haven't tried that yet though.

So glad you asked!! I have COPD/asthma and must be diligent about chemical use (or lack of)! The very best cleaner ever is a mixture (50/50) of Blue Dawn dish soap and white vinegar. Clearly, it will leave a potent odor behind for a couple hours, but so worth it in the end. Make the mixture in a spray bottle. Spray well on your tile and let it 'sit' for about 30 minutes. The first time use calls for some elbow grease, but then it is a breeze. Cleaned my shower doors better than anything else. Oh, and it's a great recipe for removing adhesive and labels. Just let soak in and peel off the label.

HINT: Whatever you use, make it easier on yourself. I have learned how to clean a bathtub and surround easier. I have a regular length broom that has a smaller than average head. I stop up the tub, pour in my mixture and then go after everything with my broom! No more bending, no more backaches! Let out the nasty water, turn on the hand held shower head and it is DONE!

@Jeanette S Great thinking, I hate the bending, gonna definitely use this hint.I also have a hand held shower head along with the regular head, so rinsing will be a breeze. Thanks Jeanette

If you want to really keep, water stains and soap build up from happening it is as easy as rinsing and drying it after each use. Go to Lowe's and buy a squeegee and dry it. I have been cleaning for a long time and find people who so this I don't ever have a problem cleaning showers or bath tubs. Pay our glass won't become etched and won't get soap scum build up.
