Transformation - of a 1950's kitchen in to my dream kitchen -

Lived with this inefficient, eyesore for 20 years. A total of 6 upper, 2 lower cabinets, 0 drawspace, ironing board cupboard, broom closet empty door less space beneath a 12 in counter top. I installed make shift shelve in the later 3, just to be able to store things...ugh!!!!!!!
My 1950's knotty pine built cabinets I finally ripped down in 2010.
Double cast Iron sink, double hung window over the sink, ( I couldn't reach to open with a view of my back yard neighbors house). They both just had to go!
Dark & dangerous doors. Entry door swung open to the left, people entering stepped up onto a landing that left them on the edge of the basement stair way. Two friends actually fell down them! I am sure you get the picture - by now --
I designed this myself - it is the second kitchen I have designed. My contractor and I worked together to customize, modernize, brighten and utilize every inch of floor and wall space.
Free standing stair well wall, w/Oak shelf. The opening allows you to see the entry and look through a window on the outside wall to the driver way and front yard gardens.
added wall cabinets to the top and bottom of the free standing wall, a back splash of marble and glass and a counter top made of black granite tile.........
Downsizing from 33" - 24" menant more usable space. New single sink with, no window ( ; and a garbage disposal.
Reversed doors making it possible to no block the stair well with the entry door.
I chose a steel door with frosted & beveled glass. Easy to keep clean and I see rainbows on my cabinets on sunny days ( :
I downsized & modernized my stove at the same time - from a 30"-24" w/all the bells & whistles- More inches saved. No window, meant we could put in more cabinets & save counter space by building a shelves above the sink and stove.

What a nice job you did. I do hope that the castiron double sink was salvageable. I one that is just a one sink with drain board and I love it but it also fits the vision of my home. I just hate to see them tossed out if they are worth saving. Of my soapbox. That does not take away from all the wonderful changes you did to better your beautiful kitchen and to make it safer. Great job.

Looks great, nice to see cabinets not painted, good choice to put in a 24 inch stove, better to have the extra counter space.
