Any Idea what this is and used for?

has inlaid mother of pearl shell "flowers" and brass inlaid decorations. The rim lock was removed but the hinge still works to keep it open and you squeeze to shut it; there appears to have been very thin pieces of brace inlaid in the channels - this needs a lot of restoration its black on the outside (i have an original non painted surface, an what appears to be a rosewood? veneer inside the 3 pix should show it all...
top L box closed bottom medallions top is untouched bottom (med. on R) is pc'd then photos of back and the sides
opening the box the lid is hinged, the sides are hinged once open the lid swings flat at the top and the sides open like wings
close up of some hardware - parts key etc is missing but the boc is easy to open you squeeze the L hing to lower the lid back down

I have seen something similar to this as an antique liquor box. You got a treasure for sure!!
