I basically inherited this. I want to paint it. What kind of paint do I use, and how do I do it?

Are you wanting to paint the metal on the fireplace box? Or the stone? If its the metal I suggest BBQ paint as it is fire resistant. If its the stone, I suggest you leave it!

I quite like it. Maybe if you paint the wood mantel black.... If I were going to paint, I'd do the panelling behind it. In my opinion only, the fireplace seems too classy to work with panelling.

I'd paint the paneling and wooden mantel. The bricks are beautiful.

You could white wash over the bricks with a sponge and watered down off white paint to tone down the color a bit. I would also paint the mantle white and the wall paneling, too. Too many colors and too much contrast going on for my taste.

use a paint for hot temperatures.

I would paint the brass with BBQ paint, paint the fireplace bricks grey and the panelling as others have mentioned. A warm white would look good for the panelling.
