I have been wondering what this stuff is, and is it beneficial in any way or is it some type of fungus?

Check with your local agriculter department. They should be able to tell you. Or you might contact a landscaper. They should be able to identify it.

It's a type of moss. It's no big deal, I get it on tree branches here in the Pac NW. It should rake up easily.

I noticed the pine needles on the ground in your pic. There are several different pine tree diseases & pests that produce a powdery, wooly or waxy residue on pine trees. I'm certainly not qualified to identify but I do think you should definitely take a sample to your county extension service or to a good landscaping service. In the past 5 years, my new husband lost ALL of the big, beautiful pines in his backyard to such a pest/disease. Trust me...better safe than sorry.

I'm afraid I cannot tell from your photo but I would recommend taking some of it, in a sealed plastic bag, to your local extension office.

If this is a light green colour, almost white, I think it is a type of moss or lichen that grows on tree trunks. I don't believe it to be anything to worry about. We had it growing on our gum tree trunks. BTW, it also grows on pine tree trunks.

@ Mary...If you do take it to your local extension service, please be sure to post what they identify it to be. I like to add to my knowledge as much as possible.

Thanks for the reply @Douglas Hunt i think i will take a sample in the landscaper or such to see it it has some sort of benefit in a garden or compost. @Carole, @Ginny McCormick also said it was lichen, she share a link with me that i will be happy to share with you if you like. @Grimalkini'll try to send the link your way but bear with me i'm knew at this.
