What Can You Suggest for a Remodel on Fireplace?

The tile and cement hearth is an eye sore. Seen on pintrest an idea to make a half moon circle out of wood with modeling for ornamental look covered with slate. But what can be done for a mantel?

  • One thing you can do is cover the brick and tile surfaces with something more up to date like slate tiles just as you mentioned, or stacked stone veneers. You can also add some built in shelves under the windows and create a mantel above the fire too with some large moulding. I personally like the hearth so if you just resurfaced the fireplace and added the large chunky molding type of mantel and added some shelving on either side under the windows I think the entire wall then would be a focal point and the fireplace wouldn't stand out so much. I think making the hearth out of wood molding would be fine and look nice. I personally would make it out of wood if you're going to use slate tiles. The two look good together.

You could insert a mantel in between the two brick pillars. Maybe some thing like this I think the arch would give a great architectural look and play down all the straight lines on the fireplace, plus if you put in the arched hearth, it would go with it too!

I would frame out the whole thing and then it would be like a completely straight, clean slate/canvas to do whatever you like. Good luck...http://www.hometalk.com/diy/living-room/fireplaces-mantels/q-decor-ideas-fireplace-remodel-4199566#

Thank you all for your feedback! Jennifer I was leaning towards window seat. The space between the fireplace and window is much narrower then it appears. But a bookcase/window seat might be worth pondering. Donna I agree some type of mantel with architectural design to play down the straight lines. Wendy can you explain more what you mean about framing it out? Again Thank you Ladies!

@Michelle Masterson I would paint the bricks with white chalk paint, add a mantel between the brick pillars and book shelves over it to add more space for books. And find a good wall fixture for extra lightning with 3 ways to cover more space. http://fr.pinterest.com/pin/484629609872790884/

My Idea is to find a local artisan potter, Collaborate with him to design you some one of a kind tiles to your liking.... Wanting to create tiles myself to my liking makes me think others would like this also.... The possibilities would be limitless..
