This is a clematis vine one of my favs, This winter mulch 2-4 inches according to temp drop. Uncover some in the spring, enjoy.

Yes, I was going to say same as above! Do not transplant or move it, if it is happy it will grow and grow and every year will come back even more beautiful!!
  • Do you have it in a pot? If so then you will have to protect it because the pot will freeze and the plant may not make it. If it is in a pot, you could just bury the pot in the ground this fall and mulch with leaves to protect it and bring it back out in the spring and start all over. If it is in the ground, then there is not much to do. clematis need mulched (I do 4") and full sun (and it is obvious that it loves this area). happy gardening

Yes, your clematis will definitely need some winter protection if in a pot. If burying the pot is not an option and it needs to stay on your carport, wrap the pot and try to keep it against a wall.

They do better when you have them in the ground with something to let them attach to when they start growing in spring.

it is in a pot with an iron trellis. I think i can bury it, doggon ground here in Utah is so hard.Do I just protect the pot or cover the whole plant? it is 4 feet tall now.
    • @Symea the pot because the top will die down. if you use an old towel and wrap the pot and then put it in a pot twice as big, box or other larger container to keep it warm and if this area is protected from the harsh winter winds then keep it against the wall as you have it and Douglas states. Until a hard freeze, you it will need to have some moisture too so make sure it gets some water/rain at least once a week. Otherwise put it in the carport next to the wall and water it every couple weeks. You want to protect the roots from freezing hard. hope this helps.
