We are having problems with moles in our yard. Is there a safe way to get rid of them?

Moles are often a sign that you have a grub issue since they feast on them. If you can take care of that, they will often leave. On the other hand, you may thank them for eating something that will damage your lawn. For a full discussion of strategies, see: http://extension.missouri.edu/p/g9440
  • Castor oil put in a gallon jug (about a tablespoon or 2) and dump it down the runs. that is what is in the expensive mole products on the shelves of garden centers plus castor oil is not harmful to humans or other pets. As Douglas states you need to also treat for grubs too and the link he gave will give you the optimum times to do this. Mole chasers work too and I bought one that is solar powered at Harbor Freight and it seems to work in the front yard. I also have dogs and cats that hunt for them too but that might not be an option for you :)

I believe that putting garlic into their holes may act as a deterrent, as they do not like the smell. Another thing that is often done locally is to place an empty plastic 2 liter bottle on to a stake (upside down). The sound created by the bottle turning in the wind is believed to irritate them, causing them to move on. I have the little 'runner' moles in my garden at the moment, and tend to walk around over the mounds that they have formed to 'flatten' the ground once more - whether or not this helps, I have no idea!!! Good luck! I will be watching this post to see what suggestions are made.
