Rust and grime!

This is a Metal sewing machine case from a 1952 Elna. What is the best way to clean the rust and crude from it? I'd like to repaint it :)

as odd as it sounds.... easy off oven cleaner ( generic does not work as well) makes sure it has Lie in it........ spray on, allow to set @20 min.... hose off.... rust/paint will be gone!.. easy peasey..... clean as a whistle ready to paint

Steel wool to loosen the rust than spray or paint with Rustolium paint.

Use Cameo cleanser it works on everything if that dont work get some chrome cleaning jelly at the Hardware store!
