DIY Chunky Wood Floating Shelves

We made more progress in the bath this week!
One area we wanted to tackle was this little nook between the tub and window wall.
Although functional, it wasn't very interesting and lacked a certain finished quality. With all the effort we are putting into updating the rest of the space, I knew we couldn't leave it looking like this. I really wanted to beef up the shelves and like with most projects around here, enlisted the help of my husband.
Using Plywood and pine lumber, he constructed floating shelves that could slip over the existing brackets. (ENTIRE tutorial and cut list on the blog). Using a hammer and his awesome man strength, he beat up the shelves for a more rustic look. Next he applied one coat of Minwax Jacobean stain and one coat of Minwax Weathered Gray, finishing with a wipe on poly.
They look awesome installed and I am loving the rustic vibe and the visual weight they provide for the room.
I can't help, but have the Will I Am song from Madagascar play over and over in my head every time I look at our new shelves!

"Chunky, chunky,

I like 'em big

I like 'em chunky

I like 'em big"
