Old House Remodel

Need to replace an interior bathroom door in a 1935 remodel. Want to keep existing hardware. Having problem finding a pre-hung, nondrilled door and a person who can drill it to fit old lock set (which is different size from todays common size).

  • Doubt you will find such a door without having to special ordering it from a lumber supply yard. Not going to find such a thing at the box stores. In most remodels of older homes. Contractors search out reclaiming stores for odd old style doors and parts. It is also just as difficult to find contractors who know how to install the older style lock sets. Its not that they cannot do it, but the tools required are specialty items and many simply do not have them. You are better off to order the door and build your own frame to install it. I recently did this for a client of mine. The door had to be made bigger height wise as the blank we were using was cut down for a tile floor install. But the door was being painted so the repair was easily hidden. We custom built the frame and once we were finished it looked great.
