White kitchen cabinets

From the 80's..looking very dingy and worn. I still want them white though. Would it be best to repaint them or put on new veneer? Or something else other than these two ideas? Also, where do I find a pro to do this? I want them to look like they did when they came out of the factory. There are 8 glass squares in most of the cabinets so I am sure that would make them hard to paint for an amature like me. Also, 2 are a little warped. I was thinking I should take them off and lay them flat with something heavy on top. Maybe even dampen them a little first to help them straighten out. Is there a better way?

  • Cabinets can be painted, but the painted finish never really is a durable as the original finish. Based upon the age of them, the finish may be a Thermofoil type. Meaning they are a plastic covered material over MDF (medium density fiberboard) These type and color cabinets were very popular back then. If you have a few photos of the doors and frames, perhaps folks could provide some additional information regarding the refinishing process. But if they are Thermofoil doors your basically out of luck. The plastic simply will not take a good finish and last. If they are paintable, spraying them is really the best way to get a professional finish. But all is not lost. There are many companies that do face lifts which can be quite economical to do. If the door panels are twisted, your not going to be able to repair them. Here is a great site with product lines that may interest you. http://www.refacedepot.com/index.aspx Hope this helps. Be sure to watch their video series on how to do it. Its not really as hard as you think.
