My fireplace needs help!

This is what my fireplace currently looks like. I need some fresh ideas on how to fix this mess! :)

Since this does not have a raised hearth, I would take off the rock completely and redo this in a beautiful marble/ceramic/or other product...putting in the same level hearth. Google some fireplace surrounds and get an idea of the look you want. You can box it in and take it all the way to the ceiling, making an alcove and installing electrical to hang your TV; you can make it traditional if that is your choice. The one thing you need to make sure you do is to put fire proof material per your local codes. There are city/county/state fire codes...be sure and check these. It appears you are limited in space on each side so you do not have much room. Be sure and post results!

It could be cool with a whitewash paint over it? Transform the look of the natural stone which is already such a great texture!

I love the big rock look. Needs a lot of elbow grease or possibly a professional cleaning. Add a chunky wood mantel to the top. Add doors or a new pretty screen. When not in use, put a nice big log look candle holder or flower arrangement in it. Hide the wires.

Yes, add a mantel and it needs cleaning, but, PLLLLLeeeeease DON'T paint it! If you don't like this look, the first person was right.

Are all the wires and cords and junk on the mantel driving you nuts?  It there a TV above it?  That would be the first thing I would do, either move it or have the wires put inside the wall.  Next, what about mixing up about three different paints using lighter colours of the brick, making a wash of them, start lightly using a rag or sponge and blot and rub heree a

Sorry, hit wrong button.  Then blot here and there adding more or less till you get the lighter version of what you have, always rubbing on or off to blend.  I hope that's understandable.  You can't change the stones but they just look so heavy.  It needs a mantel of some kind but as nice as a chunky wood mantel is, it would just be more 'heavy' .  Maybe just a thick ledge on top of wood, it doesn't look like there is much room on either side.   These are just thoughts off the top of my head so if anything is helpful that's great, if not, you have lots of great suggestions.

I had a customer who was about to add a big, thick mantle, a lot like the one above, but she wanted to paint the stones white. I talked her into letting me STAIN the stones with acrylic paints thinned with water and a tiny bit of grey mixed in to mute the colors and make them more natural. She had wine and tan in the room so I used maroon, Ivy green, tan, brown and light grey...all watered down and scrubbed on... and she loved it, didn't want anything changed. Hers went all the way to the ceiling so there were a lot of them to color. Many more colors could have been used, but I wanted it to pick up the wine and tan in the room. The green made her large parlor plants pop too.
