IKEA Shipping?

Hi all, I'm planning a HUGE shopping trip to IKEA. If I'm purchasing large items (sofa, dining table, dressers) how do I get them home? Do I need to rent a Uhaul or will they ship it to my home? THANKS in ADVANCE!

  • The IKEA near us does provide shipping services. As I would assume most do. If not, I would search out local smaller son and dad type moving company that not only will pick the stuff up, but bring it into your house. Its not really all that expensive and the effort it takes to bring it in is well worth the cost. Call the store and ask. When my son moved home from school in AZ to NJ He packed everything and we hired a moving family to carry everything from his apartment into the truck that we rented. Those couches, beds and tables are heavy. It was well worth it having them help.

I would recommend either know what you want and ordering online, or renting an inexpensive moving service. They usually charge by the hour so it doesn't end up being too much. That's how many of my friends move their larger belongings. You can find many by googling or Craigslist.

According to their website, they do deliver or can arrange with an outside carrier. My area store shows deliver starts at $59.00.

They will ship it to you for a $$ Or you could bring a bring. Rent a u-haul when you get there and go to town!

I used to work at the IKEA in Elizabeth, NJ and i know they do offer delivery, but it can be pricey. Most of the items are flat boxed and require assembly, but some items like the sofas can be bulky which would probably send the delivery costs up. I agree with those who say renting a U-haul truck for the day is a good idea. I'm pretty sure prices start in the $20 range.

IKEA shipping is usually expensive unless you are doing something bug like a kitchen. Rent a small UHaul. You do understand that most of the stuff you are getting will come in flat boxes and you assemble, including the sofa you showed. I have the sofa, which came in flat boxes and although I had a pick up, it would have fit easily in the back of an SUV. Just finished a kitchen install which I did have delivered and can't say enough about how great the cabinets are!

I had mine shipped by IKEA... You can have them put it together too but I did it myself... BTW I love the EKTORP sofa set... the fabric and sturdiness of the set is unbelievable!

When I was looking for a table from IKEA online the shipping came up as more than the table itself. I was shocked. When I was at IKEA I asked why shipping was so high. The salesperson said when you order online you are ordering from a central warehouse. When you are at the store itself and buy shipping is from the store to your house so is cheaper. The IKEA here starts at $59.95. You can rent a truck for a day for around $20-$30.

Ikea shipping can almost be as much as the piece- but they don't just hand it off to any old common carrier - you get what you pay for - a professional delivery service that handles your order with no worries of damage- I was also happy with their follow up calls with when to expect delivery! If I were buying a lot, it'd be a u haul hands down,

Our local IKEA also offers very reasonable delivery. You shop in store and bring it to the desk, fill in a form (or two) Hubs dealt with that. Their charges are based on distance from the store. Ours cost $59. Everything was delivered in good shape, no problems and no sore backs or arms from doing it ourselves.

The last time I shopped at IKEA, Charlotte I purchased a rather large assortment of items and my neighbor did as well. All items went on the same ticket for Raleigh delivery (single address) for a total of $99.00. For Raleigh that was the charge no matter how many pieces are to be delivered.

Ours delivers. Call your store and ask if they have that service.

I just bought MANY Pax units in May for our new home. As much as I wanted to order online, I had to go into the store to get the store delivery price, which is much cheaper. I ended up with over 128 boxes (shelves, doors, etc) for a $40 picking cost and $59 dely cost. Which they also unloaded into my home. You just have to go to the store, tell an associate you need to place an order for delivery. They key it in, and you pay for it at the register. The picking itself was worth way more than $40 to me! Good luck!

Some time it is better to bite the bullet and pay what they ask for shipping. Big fiasco to get my couch. For Budget van rental. It was 29.99 a day then mileage( they do give you like 100 or so.)then add taxes inc and gas. Total cost: Came to $148, a day wasted and a hurting back for hubby. Ikea would have delivered and carried into house for 99 bucks!

They do offer delivery and assembly service and will even assemble it in your home. It would be cheaper to either rent a U-Haul, or go to someplace local near the store and see what they would charge to deliver it for you.

Remember - you get what you paid for. If IKEA delivers, you are paying for the convenience of someone else doing the lifting and carrying and gasokne. If you rent a U-Haul, you are doing all the lifting, carrying and gas. Make a list of what you are buying and approximate space usage. The catalog would probably tell you the size of box(s) the items come in, then determine what size tuck you will need to carry these items home. Then ask IKEA how much they would charge for the delivery. For years, when we were young, my husband and I would do our own moving or carrying big items from stores. As the years advanced, we found the convenience of having someone one younger do it, was worth the price.

When I buy furniture from a furniture store, I always pay for delivery. Part of buying furniture!

Something else to consider. If they deliver, they are responsible until it is inside your home. If you haul and drop it, have an accident, it is stolen or gets rained on, etc......it's yours. I once knew of a man who bought a refrigerator and let it fall of the truck. EXPENSIVE lesson. Also consider the possible tax consequences. Sales tax is to the delivery point. Once upon a time a looooong time ago when microwaves were big dollars, the savings in taxes paid for the delivery charge for our first ever microwave and they were responsible until it was set up in our kitchen. No worry about whether someone might drop the monstrosity that was an early microwave! I have no experience with Ikea so have no opinion on what you should do, but just wanted you to consider those two things! Good luck with your shopping trip.
  • very delivery company and delivery responsibility is different. Its all important information to understand when you hire someone or a company to undertake this job on. Most furniture stores will deliver inside and set up, or at least remove the packing materials. But again these are the questions that must be asked prior to hiring them or purchasing their products. Regardless if its a chair or a pile of lumber.

I bought my furniture set at Ikea (the Ektorp sofa and 2 chairs - Love, love, love it!) at the nearest Ikea, about 20 miles away. They delivered and assembled it all for a very reasonable price - $100 maybe? Well worth the hassle for a single, disabled woman! I'd do it again in a heartbeat! Great service, great furniture.

They will ship. I just ordered furniture & live an hour away. In some areas they even have subcontractors to assembly if you want.
