Late Summer Yard Tour-My August Blooms

Even though it is August, I am still enjoying my landscape and all the late Summer blooms! The heat and full sun shine that comes with this time of the year actually makes for some gorgeous landscaping. The pretty stuff doesn't stop in June! Come on over and see what's going on in August. I have several vignettes to show you!
Here is my favorite area. Its my white picket fence that is framed off by a row of hostas and clumps of lirope. This years I used dark brown mulch and I really like how the dark rich color of the mulch shows off the colors of the flowers and landscape.
I spray painted this planter hot pink and it holds an asparagus fern and some creeping jenny.
Do you like Surprise Lilies? Sometimes they are called Naked Ladies and they are one of the neatest flowers I have seen in a while. You see, during the Spring time you get clumps of green foliage that sprout up for about a month, then it dies back and disappears into the ground. Then two months later in August you get these gorgeous tall stalks of pink lilies that are so fragrant! So you really get two plants in one, and the August blooms are such a nice surprise too!
This year is the first year for my two Black Eyed Susan plants, and I am happy to report that they have survived! I hope that they grow around my bird bath and fill the entire space but it will take a few years for that. You can see more pictures on my blog.

  • Love those Naked Ladies. Wish we could grow them here.

Nice. The purple flowers in the pot with the creeping Jenny looks like gomphrena (globe amaranth) - do the blooms feel dry to the touch? Gomphrena is in a group of plants called everlastings - the blooms dry easily, maintain some color and look beautiful added to potpourri or just displayed in a bowl.
