These bushes are in the front of my home. (just recently moved in). I'm not sure what type of bush this is.?? What I do know is that they are in desperate need of pruning or removal . When &/or how much of these bushes be pruned down to? Thank you!

Maybe some type of holly? It looks pretty rough. I would saturate the ground every day and wait about a month and see if that helps.

Looks like a struggling and dying Azalea bush. Azalea's are acid lovers. This site has lots of info... http://www.gardeningknowhow.com/ornamental/shrubs/azalea/common-azalea-problems.htm

@Wendy Willey I've thought these are Azalea bushes also. THANKS! I just recently moved into this rental home built in 1897. The plants & gardens have been neglected for years, obviously. Here's another photo I just took.

Azalea Have them in my front yard. Can grow to be quite big. Needs to be fed and watered regular now that your be there to care for it,lucky bush. I would prune off anything that's dead already to save the plants energy for saving the rest of it.

I prune mine after the heat of the summer is gone. If you cut a small opening in the top of the bush you can get some growth in the inside of the bush.

that is not an azalea. It is Indian Hawthorne. Many died here in Atlanta due to our unusually cold winter. It also becomes very leggy if it does not receive enough sun.

@Judith Monti Indian Hawthore has some points to the ends of leaves this bush does not.

They look like azaleas to me. If you want to significantly prune them, wait until after they bloom next spring.

I think Indian Hawthorne also. the leaves seem to be too shiny for azalea. I have both and I go for the Hawthorne. To be perfectly sure take a leaf to your County Ext. agent or at least to a nursery.

I have doubts about the hardiness of Indian hawthorn in Maryland.
