When You Don't Have a White Kitchen!

What do you do when you don't have a white kitchen? They are all the rage right now but for those of us who find ourselves with dark cabinets it can feel a little bit like we aren't part of the "in" crowd. I hope you will read the rest of this over at our blog to find out how you can still create a space that is light, bright and full of charm without breaking open that can of white paint!

Simple window treatments allow windows to bring in as much light as possible while still adding warmth.

PS>>>> (You knew that was coming , didnt you?)However , I do love cherry cabinets too! But I would not pay for them in here! Do what makes you FEEL GOOD about your kitchen. Its bad enough if you dont like to cook or do anything in there, it should be a pleasant place for you.

I have cherry cabinets too! They are "character grade" which means that they were made with knots and checking and I couldn't paint them, even if I wanted to. I love them but I was beginning to think that I was the only one left in north America who didn't have a white kitchen so, from me and the other two families who still don't have cable television (or dish), thank you, from the bottom of our cherry-picking hearts! xo

MY FAMILY HAS A DISLIKE FOR ALL THAT ''WHITE'' OUT THERE! MY SON-IN-LAW REFACES CABINETS & VERY FEW CHOOSE WHITE. I CHOSE A LIGHTER COLORED WOOD GRAIN, WHICH IS VERY CLASSY IN MY OLDER, OPEN CONCEPT KITCHEN. I ONCE HAD DARK CABINETS IN MY MOBILE. I SCRUBBED THEM WELL & OILED THEM WITH OLIVE OIL! I TOOK THE OLD FASHIONED KNOBS APART & REFINISHED THEM SILVER.THE FINISHED RESULT WAS QUITE WONDERFUL. I WOULD NEVER ''PAINT'' CUPBOARDS!!

White was in about 15 years ago; it is no longer the color of infuence. Have you been in a Pottery Barn or Crate and Barrel and seen the black influence so prevelant in model homes (new) model homes.

I have found that what was "in" one year is usually "out" within a couple. Eventually, most things do make their way back to being "in" though. In the meantime, I am the one living in my house, so i need to do what makes me happy, and not the crowd. Even if selling a house, chances are that people are going to change some things that you have done to it anyway....I know my parents have never bought a house and not made changes of some sort to it - and over the course of their marriage, they have owned over 20 houses.

Just choose what you like and forget the rest. You have to live there.

I love natural, unpainted wood and it doesnt matter if it is the dark, light or medium color. What matters is what is done with the rest of the room so that it all flows and makes the owner happy. My cabinets need to be refinished and are a blonde wood but the rest of my kitchen is blue with chicken decor. I love it as it is my room of peace and joy.

Been there and done that. Had white cupboards for about 5 years. Also had antiqued green and harvest gold. These all were in the 70's and 80's. Redid again in 1998 and still love them. These days when people talk about being an individual, you don't have to do what is "IN". Be true to yourself. You have to live with it. Be a rebel. Don't follow the crowd.

I'm sorry but if I see one more white kitchen in a historical house renovation, I think I will scream ! ! ! I'm with some of the other people on this page - if I want wooden cabinets, I want them to look like wood.

I totally agree, Lee! I too am anti stainless appliances. Just had to get a new range and opted for black. BIG mistake!! Way too much dust. Also I don't recommend the glass cook top. Constantly cleaning!! Fridge is 24 years old. I'm sure it will be dead soon. Not yet sure what I will do then.

Brenda & Lee, for me personally, I am non white & all black or wood covered appliances also. Brenda, they sell the wipes for the glass cook top & the polish for easy upkeep. Also, I use a razor blade paint scraper to clean the cooked on residue & use windex in between. I love it & find it to be easier than dismantling gas or old style electric stoves. I am on my 2nd one & chose it again. I hope you will begin to like yours as well.

Lee Anne, I agree with you on the glasstop! This is also my 2nd one and I love it. After all those years of dismantling to clean, this is so much easier. I wipe it off everytime I use it and so the major cleaning is very rare, and still so much easier.

I have never had stainless steel sink and was considering it this time as I heard it was easier to keep clean, still dont know yet. Since I dont make much money I am doing my kitchen piecemeal. ...»

Still have the floor, countertop and sink to do. The amount of white in my kitchen is so small that I forget its there. I like it as trim but balk against major amounts of white in any room.

I use the cream and the spray and the razor blades. Maybe I will get used to it in time.

YAY FOR THESE LAST COMMENTS! I`M NOT ALONE RE WHITE, WHITE, WHITE! EXCEPT MAYBE FOR HOSPITALS! I WAS BEGINNING TO WONDER IF PEOPLE HAD FORGOTTEN ABOUT BEAUTIFUL COLOR---EXCEPT FOR HOMETALK PEOPLE, OF COURSE! I DO LOVE MY STAINLESS STEEL APPLIANCES (HAVE ALWAYS BEEN A ``SILVER`` PERSON) & MY BLACK STOVETOP. YOU CAN BUY THE WHOLE PKG, RAZOR WITH HANDLE, SPECIAL CLEANER, ETC! SO MUCH EASIER THAN OTHER STOVES & ALWAYS LOOKS NEW--MINE IS 9 YRS OLD.

I'm on my third glass top stove. . . love it. Cleaner and a microfiber towell makes it look new all the time. BUT I am now thinking about the Rustoleum kit to re-do cabinets. (Paint dark). Wondering if this could be a mistake.

Though I think white kitchens are pretty, I'll always chose stained wood cabinets, hands down. Your dark wood cabinets are so rich, warm and welcoming. I love them!

We have dark stained maple cabinets. One wall has wall cabinets that start at counter height. The corner sink area has a cobalt tile back splash and a hutch like upper cabinet with the side being open shelving for display. There's also a hutch like area to the right with stained beadboard ...»

backsplash between the base and wall cabinets. Then there's the floor to ceiling oven cabinet. Along with a stained island. The counters are somewhat light taupe Silestone with the floors being diagonally checked in white and taupe. The designers at HoDe, I think, jokingly call it the "weird kitchen".

To each their own when it comes to a white kitchen or not, but ya'all have definitely convinced me to put a glass top stove in when I hit the lottery! I love cooking w/ gas - the temperature always stays even, have never burnt anythng in the oven, but keeping the top looking brand new - I gave up on!

Terri J. I hear ya. I've been wanting a glass top cooktop for years now. When we built our all electric home I was using cast iron skillets or I'd have gotten one then. Wrist injuries forced me to give up the pans a few years later. We'd have replace it already, but for the cost. Well hubby said to just do it, but as usual, I'm the one holding off. Besides the ones with downdraft, like we have now, have knobs! Why I have no clue.

Oh, I forgot about the fact that my sister built a brand new house, had a glass top stove and somehow it got ruined. I will have to e-mail her, and find out how, so nobody on HT will make the same mistake she did!

Beautiful kitchen - you really have made it bright and lovely! I too don't have a white kitchen, our cabinet color is a bit lighter I think than yours!! We moved here just this past July - our cabinetry is all custom and not cheap so I won't be replacing it. Love your post!

Well, I'm anxiously waiting for the time (this year) that I can replace my cooktop with a gas cooktop with sealed burners. I currently have the glass and NEVER again. It might be okay for some families if everyone is a very neat cook and cleans it immediately! However, two of us cook in this kitchen and one is not so neat. I don't think it will ever look good again. I have the cream, I've used the Scotch Brite pads that contain the cleaner and fasten to a handle. It never looks completely ...»
clean. So I will probably go with a gas in Stainless. I've had black and can't say I'm crazy about it. Shows every speck of dust. Wait until you see it after you've been baking! The cooktop I am considering is a 30" Wolf and it appears to be fairly easy to clean. Anyone have any experience with it?
