I think once you get it all painted and put up, it's going to look so nice. Nice idea. A blogger posted her door arbor that screwed pointy L shape shelf backers to bottom of door and stuck in the ground. Maybe you can do something like that. Sorry I couldn't find her clip, but this way you can overlap them a bit to give some dimension and can easily be taken off if you decide not to go with it. I have a very similar area in my back yard where I have a large expose concrete foundation exposed. Grass doesn't grow in that area, so I like your idea. Can't wait to see the finish product.
