Furniture ideas for 60 inch tv

Any ideas on what to do with this wall to house a 60 inch tv (my husband insists on). This one on the stand is going away and we'll be buying a new one. It's a new house and the plan is to buy a console or wall unit, then rug (that one is ugly) then tall panel drapes I feel like since the room is so light a wall unit could seem to heavy. But a console might leave so much open space above the tv. Any ideas on what would look best? I do not have an eye for decorating and am at a lost. Behind the tv is a kitchen with cream cabinets and a cherry island. Thanks for your help.

My parents have their TV in an armoire, and I really like it because when they have company over or if they are just hanging out, they can close the armoire doors, and the TV is not the focal point of the living room. Plus, you get some storage for DVDs or a cable box or whatever.

I think if you keep the piece in the same color as your kitchen cabinets, it wouldn't appear to be heavy. With a 60" TV, you may end up having to go with a custom piece (which isn't much more than the pre-made entertainment centers if you find the right cabinet guy). You could then have it made with sliding panels or doors to hide the gigantic TV when not in use. TVs have gotten so big (I cannot understand why because there is so little worth watching) that they are like large elephants sitting in the room! But for some reason the guys love them! I think that since TVs have gotten so large that there is a market where you can buy prebuilt open shelfing for them. If you do not intend to have an electrical outlet installed TV height, attach an extension cord to the back of the cabinet and run it up to the TV before you put the cabinet into place. ...»
You can paint or repaint the cabinet a coordinating or contrasting color if you want to get funky! By the way, that rug is LOVELY! The classic red style goes with any decor!

What about the Besta series from Ikea? You could customize upper cabinets to fill in the space. If you do the cabinets in white it shouldn't feel too heavy - and can store a bunch of stuff for you behind closed doors.

I am thinking something in wood with built in shelves and cabinets that you can use for storage. If you paint it the same color as the trim on your windows you would make a great focus wall. Put things that you love on the shelves. I love this look!

You could use a set of 3 lower bookshelves and place the tv on top. pictures and plants to add a little color and character

ok, so here's a GUY thought! Get a 70" TV! ok, seriously, I just saw at my friend's house where the builder recessed the whole TV so the screen was FLAT with the wall. I am having a contractor coming out a week from tomorrow to give an estimate to do that for 3 of my TVs. Completely recessed into the wall, to include the electric and cable! His looks so nice, maybe I can get a picture if interested.

If it's in a movie room I would frame old movie posters and scatter them about the wall.

Having done many electrics for home theaters, I agree with Jacqueline.....mount the screen on the wall at proper height. Add a sound bar directly beneath the screen and with a buffet or conversation piece below, all the wires will be hidden and the audio equipment can be stored in same....(out of sight).
That makes for a very tastefull installation.

we have a large one that we wall mounted .. hubby built a wall protruding around it... sort of frame it in... under that you could run shelves for your cable box, x box, dvd player or dvd's... any of those little things.. and all the wires could be hidden then... hubby could put electric outlet anywhere in that "new" wall....

Wall mount the TV. To match the framing in your windows... (am assuming the panels you are referring to are shear and no solid) use lots of floating block style shelfs in the color wood of the kitchen counter. You can scatter the block like shelfs in a random pattern. You can put some type of green plant (snow white pot) one possibly two of the shelves to bring in the greenery that you have outside through those beautiful windows. color of whatever rug or throw pillows you use... and depending on your style you could possibly place a unigue cabinet directly under the tv... like an old cherry wood bureau. This could house your blue ray, cable box, etc. and the draws will come in handy to hide movies/music. Just a thought. :)

I had this same dilemma, being the 'Queen of Cheap' I fiddled with these freebees until I got the configuration just right. The pic is not the best, but I think you can get the idea.
One old dresser, painted black, two old shelving units (already black) and three shadow boxes from another room that I also painted black. The dresser is the perfect height for tv viewing, and the shadow boxes make the whole arrangement symmetrical! Anyway that was my solution and, what the heck, it cost less than six dollars for paint!

I like Jim G's idea. Recess the TV then you won't have to look at any cords or the back of the TV from either side angle

I saw a cool DIY show and they built a book shelf like thing all around the TV for storage ( dvds, cds,Wii, books, etc.) and had two book self units on barn door tipe rail to cover tv when not in use. It was beautiful and looked like 1 built in unit. TV was mounted on wall with no wires showing.

attended Homearama in Deep Creek this week. There were quite a few TVs mounted on wall mounts whewe you could see the mount, cable and electric from both sides. Didn't look very nice. (My LED in my Guest room is same and I hate that you can see behind from the side. I do have a Plasma in a TV room where we have a credenza under it to hold audio/visuak and hide electric and cable, but honestly, the TV in the wall, with cable and electric hidden looks so much nicer. ** If you are going ...»
to spend the money, think long term what you think looks best and go from there. (ecessing a wall and puttng electric and cable behind the TV is only costing me a few hundred dollars, which is really nothing when you think long term and how much nicer it may look, cleaner!

you could still use the wall mount bracket,then frame around outside of t v with 1 x 6 or whatever it take to get frame out to front of t v,then put casing around that. so when t v is pushed back flush to wall it looks like it it in a frame ,but you can still pull it out and swivel it side to side.

The TV is too small for the wall. I would suggest a bigger TV. Sharp has a good 80"
