There are several effective products that will remove build up, CLR, Lime Away, The Works. I unscrew the shower head and put it in a bowl and cover it with one of these products. I also use a TFE paste, (teflon) around the threads so it won't leak after I put it back on.

the best way & probably the cheapest way is to fill a bag with vinegar& tape it on the shower head let it remain soaking over night . And the best part is your not dealing with harsh chemicals

I think Jennifer has as great idea....that way you don't have to remove it and put it back on. That part would challenge me....

I use the CLR, in a plastic bag around the shower head. It will break down minerals better than the vinegar. Also, you can soak the screens in your faucet the same way to improve water pressure at the faucet, too

There's usually a screen inside the shower head where it attaches to the pipe coming out of the wall. That sometimes gets clogged up. Remember, righty tighty, lefty lucy!
