They Don't Call It HOTLanta For Nothing...

With temperatures expected to be 100+ by the weekend, now is the time to make sure your home is ready for the heat! We have posted some helpful to help your home keep it's cool: http://bit.ly/LgVDrQ - but we'd really love to get some more creative ideas for staying cool!

-Keep the thermostat set at 78 degrees F or higher if using ceiling fans. Don't air-condition unused rooms.

-Clean your A/C's air filter every month during cooling season. Normal dust build-up can reduce air flow by 1 percent per week.

-Turn off your A/C when you leave for more than an hour.

I never thought Colorado would compete with Georgia or Jersey for summer heat, but try 105 degrees and no AC (you're not supposed to need it - it has NEVER been that hot in Colorado), and you can't open the windows at night because of the threat of wildfire smoke inhalation.

Going to be even hotter here in NJ next few days. Close to 100. Hoping for a cooler week next week. Moving horse to KY for show and to look for future home. Its been over 100 there most of this week.

Have fun in JC. Lots of great places to eat.

For those of you not here in Atlanta...please do not call it HOTlanta...that's a throw back marketing term from the 80's. No one here calls it that anymore. :)

I don't know Seth, these record temperatures might revive the name for those of us who live here! (and those of us who have never really referred to Atlanta by that term in any seriousness...) 106 on Saturday?! Good grief!

Steve, that is quite a dilemma. Hope you're safe from the smoke & fire. What ARE you doing for the heat?

Seth, I hear "hotlanta" frequently ... typically when people are referring to the heat or women here. Some things just never die. Anyway, I am so not looking forward to this heat. Thanks for the tips, AK.

Steve G, hopefully the heatwave will pass quickly. Stay safe out there with the wildfires and everything.

Thanks Teresa. Thankfully, Colorado has finally gotten some rain this week, and some of those wildfires are finally under control.

Steve, if you dont open windows at night due to the smoke pollution ..what about the day time? How do you handle that?

    Hi Bernice,

Thankfully we don't have to worry about that anymore - for now. Basically, during the height of the wildfires, the smoke levels varied a lot depending on the wind and the fire conditions. It was rare that you could smell or see smoke for a full 24 hours, but when I could see and smell smoke outside my house, I closed up all the windows, and I would draw the shades to keep the heat to a ...»

    minimum.

There were a couple of nights that got pretty hot, and I know the tyke was uncomfortable. There were some days we escaped to Denver for the day, too. I think perhaps the hardest part for me was not bring able to bike right at the peak of biking season. But when I went out on a morning ride and was choking on smoke as I started to pedal hard, I realized it probably wasn't a good idea.

Coming back from Seattle last evening, we saw a double rainbow, one was a full arch, the one below it was half arch...how often do you see something like that? We just missed another monster storm, but the rainbows were exciting, watched them for probably an hour until it got too dark. We were driving toward them!

However we also are having hot weather and many fires from lightning.

Ha. The upshot of keeping my fast-growing hair really short is that it grew out enough in two weeks to buzz it with a number 1 clipper. Here is a photo of the guys I rode with for Bike MS. I'm in the front in the middle - with the pink hair, of course.
    • My pink head and the folks that pulled me 150 miles (I did a little bit of the pulling, too).

@AK... and others, I keep a couple of fans going , one across the room from the other, pointed in one direction to move the air in a current, instead of oscillating and just pushing it every where. So it goes around in a circle sort of. I also put the a/c about 78, and put the fans in front of the vents to pull the cool air out of them. Seems to work for us, especially in a mobile home with non wood siding. With no fans moving the air, when a/c is not working at the moment, the air seems ...»
to get still and I notice it is hotter than when air is moving.

No Bernice, all the smoke had cleared by the time we rode. And it was a fast and easy, but HOT, ride. We had a good time, and I think averaged about 17 miles an hour, which I was pretty excited about, but it's not going to qualify me for the Tour De France or anything.

@Steve....And you covered your beautiful pink hair with a helmet, right? so..........? Did you make any newspapers, ..".man with pink hair blahblahblah...."?

@AK..we dont normally have this much HUMIDITY here, for maybe 3 weeks end of June beginning July tops, but this year, it is really getting me down. it just goes on and on,

any tips on handling the humidity ? I seem to be especially affected since heart surgery.

Of course. Thanks for asking. I had a pretty good wreck last year, and I was thankfully wearing my helmet. I wasn't even going that fast, but I still was knocked unconscious and scraped up my face pretty good. Anyhow, I never even ride down the driveway without my helmet now.

And no, there are enough freaky people in Denver that pink hair barely registers around here.

Well, I'm pretty sure I have all the marbles that I possessed before the wreck, but I'm not sure if that really means I have all my marbles.
