Create a Farmhouse Look With an Old Technique

Remember when we used to use crackle finish to create a "country" look using forest green and burgundy? Here's a way to use this same technique to create a fresh farmhouse look.
By using farmhouse colours like ASCP Duck Egg and Old White and adding some chicken wire instead of glass, a dated 1930's cabinet now has a fresh farmhouse look.
We started by removing the glass and giving this piece a good cleaning with TSP.
Then the entire piece was painted with ASCP Duck Egg Blue. This will be the base colour. One coat was enough as I wanted the wood to show through in places. I also gave some areas a light sanding to bring out the wood along the edges.
Once the base coat is dry, apply a thick layer of Artisan Enhancements Easy Crackle. Use an inexpensive foam brush or staining brush.
Then paint one coat of your top colour (in this case it was ASCP Old White). Stand back and watch the crackling magic begin. As the paint dries, the crackle medium "pulls away" the paint revealing a crackled effect.
By adding a thick layer of medium, I was able to get a lot of deep crackling which allows the blue to show through. Distress a bit with a coarse sandpaper for a more rustic look.
This 1930's china cabinet is now the perfect pie cabinet for a farmhouse kitchen.
