Dawn is good but remember it is such a powerful grease cutter they use it to wash oil off wildlife that has been caught in oil spills. For some pets, using Dawn too concentrated or too often can strip too much of the natural oils from the skin and leave your pet itchy from dry skin and coat. A better way to use Dawn as a flea shampoo is to mix it with a product called "Critter Oil." I have used Critter Oil for probably 20 years. It was first formulated by the owner of a pet grooming and holistic product shop in St. Petersburg, Florida (where I use to live). Critter Oil is all natural, as it is made with a blend of 15 different essential herbal oils. Critter Oil can be used on dogs, cats, horses, birds, exotics, and even on your lawn and plants. It smells amazing, really fresh and clean! No doubt it is a little pricey but it's far more effective than commercially bought flea shampoos and a little bit of it goes a long way. For Critter Oil shampoo, you combine 1 tsp. of Critter Oil, 4 TBSP of original blue Dawn or blue Ultra Dawn in a 32 ounce bottle and fill with water. The Critter Oil not only breaks down the ecto-skeleton of fleas and ticks, it enhances the coat and skin of your pet(s). Critter Oil can also be mixed with water in a spray bottle for misting, or with baking soda and sprinkled on your carpet. If you have an itchy pet with chronic skin problems, Critter Oil will also help that too as some of the essential oils in the formulation have anti-fungal and anti-bacterial properties to soothe and heal skin irritations. It truly is an amazing product. Here's the website if you would like more information on Critter Oil: http://critteroil.com/ (I am not connected with the Critter Oil company, nor do I receive any compensation for recommending their product. I have personally used the product for many years with great success so I'm more than happy to pass along the info about Critter Oil to anyone who needs to treat their pets for fleas and ticks but hates using toxic flea products in the process.)

We have a Lab with such sensitive skin we fight skin problems all year, worse in the summer. We can use nothing that dries out her skin!

@Jeanette S I would highly suggest you try the Critter Oil. I once had a German Shepherd like your Lab. I was at my wit's end over her chronic skin problems and my search for something besides antibiotics and steroids to help her is how I stumbled upon Critter Oil. Her skin issues cleared up and she never needed another antibiotic or steroid again for the remaining 7 years of her life ! You might have to initially reduce the amount of Dawn in the Critter Oil shampoo recipe because I found it was a little too strong for this particular dog but the 4 TBSP has never been a problem for any of the other dogs we've had through the years.

Head and shoulders shampoo it has worked many times for us when our dogs have visited places that have fleas. It contains prithione zinc 1% that the fleas don't like.

I would suggest k9 advantix or k9 advantix 2 or frontline plus.
