Building a Rustic Barn Wood Shelf with Faux Finished, New, Pine, Bead Board Back

I reclaimed 100 year old barn wood to build the frame for this rustic hutch, but used new, pine, bead board for the back. I faux finished the pine using a combination of materials including: paint and both pickling stain and wood tone stain to achieve the look of aged and weathered wood. For more information on how I achieved the look, please visit: http://www.serendipityrefined.com/2012/04/fa...

I'm such a sucker for weathered wood and whites! Out of curiosity - what made you decide to use the pine board instead of more barn wood?

Hi Lisa! I really wanted beaded board for the back. I felt that more barn planks on the back would be a little too rustic for the room that i put it into. I also like the visual variation and the scale of the beaded board versus the wider planks.

you may be the queen of faux finish...when i first looked, i thought the opposite, that the back was the old part.

    Beautiful!!!

We own our own saw mill and I just love cutting the boards and aging them...I have so many projects in my head that I can't even begin to create right at the moment!! My theory is, "old is awesome!" Beautiful, beautiful work!!!
