  • While a photo of the deck condition is ideal as it will help others in providing answers. There are few points on these products. All of the deck restore products are pretty good. They all work well, Many complaints that have been reported come back to poor prep, cutting corners, and not really understanding what these products are designed to do. Restore products, (not the brand) are really only thick paints that fill the voids and cracks that most decks suffer from lack of proper maintenance. Most folks think this is a magic bullet that the deck will be perfect and there will not be any issues after the restoring process is done and complete. The issue is, its still cracked and damaged wood that has been masked over by paint. What this really means is, its a short term patch that will improve the deck appearance for a short term. The length of this is entirely dependent upon the condition that you start with. I have done a few of these over the past couple years. They continue to look ok, but personally I do not care for them much. The tend to have a scratchy rough surface, but it wears down quickly. Voids that were filled tend to look ok, but still tend to remain and require a bit more cleaning as the lower areas within the splits tend to fill with water and dirt. They are a dog to paint and look good, Use much more product then they claim you need to use. You should use a liquid stain first along the edges as the thicker product does not work in well along the edges of the boards leaving unfinished edges that are visible. The bottom line its a quick fix that looks ok but does not really repair any wood damage it only hides it. Once these products are on the deck, your not really able to go back without spending a ton of time and effort getting the paint film off of the deck surface. Ideally a few replaced boards and a good cleaning followed by a good quality stain will make the deck look great and last a much longer time then just a cover up product.

Actually, I need to make my deck look better too, but I have yet to see one of these products where the ratings are good. We have trees and there are leaves on our deck all the time...then it rains and they make ugly black marks! I sometimes wish we did not have a deck and had just stayed with our screen porch. I don't want to go to the expense of covering and screening the deck! But I am about ready to.

I redid my deck this spring I also was going to use deck restore until I asked some questions. .You have any remaining stain on deck must get it ALL off or the restore will peal off .. Also as you know one gallon is very expensive and only goes 50 square feet for on coat .one gallon 50 square! At that price I figured it would be cheaper to replace top boards .. I used Behr sold ..used 2 gallons and it turned out beautifully .. good luck

I bought the Restolium and will begin my huge week long (at least) project next week. In the mean time, after reading the cons of this product, I have a BIG question that I need answered ASAP as I am purchasing the rest of the materials on Friday. Can Restore 4x Deck Coat be applied over Oil Based Products? . I want to apply Clear Preserve first which is an oil based product. Will Restore 4x Deck Coat adhere or will it peel off? If it will peel off, what can I coat the deck with as a primer to avoid peeling. I want this to last many many years, 12 + as they say it will. Please advise. Thanks!
  • Not recommended to clear the deck then paint. The paint needs to bite into the wood. The sealer will only prevent the paint product from sticking. This will void any warranty. The idea of the restore product is to fix ugly deck surfaces. If your deck wood is in good shape, then simply choose a good quality sealer/stain product. Every year splash water on deck surface. If its beads up your still good, As soon as the water begins to soak into the wood, its time to reseal Done properly you will get much more then 12 years out of deck. Stick with the same product line and do not mix products. You will spend a ton of time fixing all the issues that will result.
