Kim S, yes it is a monarch caterpillar. Without milkweed the Monarch butterfly would be extinct. I have a bed full of the milkweed just for the Monarch. -
Because most of the monarch butterflies were killed while over wintering in Mexico when they had a freeze. To rebuild the monarch population people can plant milkweed; which is a lovely plant. Monarchs lay their eggs on the plants and the caterpillars eat the milkweed when they hatch. Just doing my part; and how cool that it actually worked! -
As a child I recall playing w/monarch catapillars; we always found them in and around Banyan trees. -
