I've weighed in on this a couple of times Hope B, and still don't care for the electric fireplaces with one possible exception, those Amish hand-made cabinet heaters with the "real look" fire. They blow as much hot air as another but again, I'm a gas fireplace log man from way-back! Best of luck with your choice ( most utility providers offer rebates and big discounts for gas conversions of multiple appliances )
Here is the winterly land of Colorado, electric heat is the most expensive way to heat a home, and this holds true just about any where. The $$$ per / BTU is the best way to evaluate the performance of these. If you are merely looking for ambiance then chose what looks good to you.
Are you looking for Heat or just ambiance? I have one that uses a sterno type product, looks pretty good...it is a corner unit in the bedroom. I also a very contemporary one that should hang on the wall and run to the gas line [not installed yet, long story]. Check online for styles and prices. Good luck!
Resistance heat is very expensive and gas fireplaces are dangerous if not properly vented. Are you cold in the winter? If so, consider weatherization on your home. Let us know your motivation for this change so we can give you better direction.
Thanks everyone. I'm moving into a foreclosure for the next couple of years and it has an electric fireplace with logs. I have a woodburning fireplace now which I use maybe twice a year in the winter. I will miss it, but I'm trying to see the benefits in using an electric one. It seems as if cost will be a factor, but thankfully the house has a heat pump.
A couple of years ago I picked up an electric heater to use in my workshop which is located in my unheated but insulation basement. This was a heavy duty 240 V unit. I had been using propane "space" heaters but was interested in using something that could be set on a thermostat and run with out supervision. After running a dedicated 240 power supply and using this off and on for a couple of weeks during a project that required a fair amount of finishing (main reason for heat in my shop)

I got my first electric bill. My normal $50 a month bill skyrocketed to $270....needless to say I sold the heater and switch back to my propane system. I can run both propane heaters for nearly a week straight and only use about $15 in propane.
Hopr this is helpful, JL
