we too made our food grade barrels into rain barrels by adding spigots that were given to us by the gentleman in the plumbing dept. Total cost was 1 tube of caulk and 2 cans of spray paint. Our barrels were given to us at a job site my husband was working-where did you get yours? p.s. we added a few bricks to the inside bottom of the barrel to raise the water level to be able to empty it more completely.

I think you might want to paint your barrel, Daniela. An opaque white might still let in a lot of the sunshine that algae like. You don't want algae to bloom in your barrel. That will be a mess.

Steve, you are correct. We had some rather large water holding tanks (white) that we had to paint to keep the algae bloom down. We still had to add Zerotol to the tanks to keep it under control, but our tanks were as I recall around 1000gal for back up when our well went down in the nursery.

the paint seems to be a great idea! we have left over dark brown paint outdoor paint from last year, when we repainted the outside trim of the entire house!
