How a mushroom led to a master balcony remodel

From the first time I saw my house, I knew I wanted to remodel the master balcony. In the summer of 2011 that dream came true... with a little help from a mushroom... #PorchPride
Time: 2 Months Cost: $14000 Difficulty: Moderate

With a view like this from the master balcony...

...it was a crime that the balcony looked like this: tiny and uninviting. As a result, we barely used it.

And that's why we never noticed that it was starting to rot (as in, there was a giant mushroom growing out of the wood.)

So we tore down the small, wooden balcony...

As a bonus (a HUGE bonus) we got an "outdoor room" below.

We put up a tongue-in-groove ceiling, lights and a fan.

    We also added outdoor blinds.

    It's extremely comfortable.

The upstairs is comfortable as well.

And now we we enjoy our view almost every day. (All thanks to a mushroom!)

I am in LOVE with this space. That stone work around the pillars is so perfect!

Thank you! I have to say, it wasn't complete until Sept of 2011, so although we were able to use it throughout the year (we're in San Diego), we didn't get the full "summer experience" until now. And it has been such an amazing addition to our home :)

Love this! This is the perfect addition to my existing deck. My MB is directly above with a bank of 3 windows that I'd love to replace and add a balcony to! I was also looking for a way to cover the first story to get some protection from the elements! PERFECT!!!
