Re do log home kitchen cabinets

Lynne, I LOVE your site!!!! Been looking for a great one for ages!! Anyway, we have a tiny lakefront log home which is in wonderful condition. I am decorating it in a, believe it or not, a modern, organic, eclectic style. Reclaimed wood furniture, modern light fixtures, artwork, future roller window shades, etc ( we need thermal, light blocking). The big question is what to do with the kitchen. Love the layout, countertops are great. Just dislike the cabinet doors. Been thinking of replacing them but painting them keeps returning to my brain. Plus I am thinking ---BLACK---!!!!! A satin finish with new hardware maybe?? Then, eventually a complementary island of a different accent color? Am I crazy? My friends all have showroom houses. Ours is " put your feet up & enjoy the view". Give me a boost, please. And if you have any crazier than normal ideas, I would LOVE to hear them. Plus, would you please make me some grapevine spheres??? I'm happy to buy them, and they are light to ship, don't you think??I'm too old to make them myself and I won't tell a soul!!! Thank you, Lynne---keep on!!!! Mary Coluccio

It would be great if you showed some pics, Mary. Your house sounds lovely, as does the idea of painting your cabinets. IMHO trends change so much and yesterday's look can be so dating that, if I were you, I'd go with something not trendy, like, I dunno, maybe metal: copper or tin. (I was gonna say barn wood but that might be just as trendy.) Years ago, we remodeled our lakefront house and vented our stove out the roof (since it didn't back up to a wall and the hub insisted it be vented outside). There was a distance between the top of the cabinet and the ceiling and rather than have a bare pipe I covered it with copper flashing. The price of copper has risen dramatically since so copper flashing or roofing might not work for you but how about tin ceiling tiles? Or even tin flashing? BTW I think you meant to respond to someone else's post. You might go back and pose your question there in order to get a response.

At first, I would change the hardware. It's quick and an instant update. Then sleep on redoing the cabinets, as you look through the numerous redo that people on Hometalk have done. Something will strike you and a light bulk will go off to tell you it's time to do it. There is nothing wrong in having an island that does not match the rest of kitchen. Whatever you decide, don't paint the cabinets black. Frankly, it will make it look like you are trying to hide dirt. I don't see black as being organic or eclectic. Good luck.
