This is a Stacked Stone Fireplace we re-vamped in Two and a Half Days.
This was a Total of $1800.00 material and Labor....you think it was worth it?
By the time I remember to take a picture we had begun Demolition. This is before.
Overlaid Framing....
Notched studs 2" to insert raw wood cedar Mantel for addition support. It took about 20 minutes
Had to run courses half way the first day and the rest the next day. The weight can make them fall

Question ... is a mantle necessary according to code? If it's just decorative ... making built-in "cubbies" could provide display space for dust catchers and mitigate heat concerns.

No - mantles are definitely not required
