Is this area carpeting? If it is my first response is to hire a professional if you insist on doing it yourself then this is what I know about area carpeting. Wool shrinks so cold water is important. Hot will shrink it. Using Wool Safe shampoo. It has to say wool safe. Look on the bottle. If the steam cleaner you use gets to hot it will shrink it. Rinse well because carpet shampoo residue will grab dirt from your shoes and it will at track dirt. If it's throw rugs...taking them outside and using the hose. Hose down and wool safe shampoo I use a broom and scrub it, rinse it and I use white towels to absorb the water. Then I roll it up and set it on it's end to dry a little not directly in the sun. Then later when it's damp I roll it out flat and use white towels to absorb the water again. And let it dry flat out of the heat. For wall to wall....i really would use a professional or a cleaner with only cold cold water. If you shrink it ...it pulls away from the wall. And it's a mess.
