Has anyone purchased tubers in the fall?

I'm in Ontario. At discount prices, (and remember they have been in the store not planted all year) I wonder if they will be worth planting next year. How is best to store them? I do well with tubers- I have planted each and you and store them in paper bags.

my sister in Michigan takes her bulbs and tubers out in the late fall and puts them in a paper bag under her stairs where it is always cool, not freezing and puts them back in the spring works for her
  • The problem with buying them from a store after sitting on the sales shelves is that the moisture and fluctuation in temps usually destroys the bulbs, rhizomes, and tubers. Are these tubers hard still? If there is any softness, then they most likely are not viable. Storing them in paper bags in a cool, dry place is the best (like an insulated garage) where they will not freeze. Personally I do not buy any roots, tubers, or rhizomes, and bulbs from the store if they have been there more than a couple months. There usually is no guarantee for them either so for me the risk is not worth it. good luck! happy gardening.

Plants are amazingly resilient so there is always a chance you may have success. If the price is right, why not take a chance? Follow Sandy's and The Garden Frog's advice for storage.
