Repurposed Glassware=Garden Topiaries (easy project)

We all have those vases and bowls hanging around. You know, the ones you get flowers in, but then just put in the cupboard. I have the perfect solution for all of those, and it will help "prettify" your garden or flower bed. For more pictures see my blog post-Repurposed Glassware (totems and more) http://bit.ly/Lws0Y1

How do you keep them from falling over with the wind or otherwise?

So many great minds here! I've been making similar using thrift store repurposed saucers, bowls and plates and still give them to friends for gifts. If they get broken or tornadoed, I just make new ones.

Marilyn, I've had my original one outside for almost 4 years. The wind has never blown it over. I use a large plate or a microwave turntable for the base. If it's not really pretty, I cover it with some mulch in my flower bed. Be warned--if you start collecting glass to make these, it's hard to stop! They are addicting!

Gail is right! Once you start, you can't wait to test the waters with the next design. I've quit making them three times now & always someone brings me more glass & off I go again. Something I've started doing different, is add solar light to them. I have several in my flower beds, but also made one that belonged on my antique dresser.
    • This is the piece I now have on antique dresser. I had my husband put a light in the bottom, so makes a nice nite lite for our guests. Is made out of two antique light fixtures and a crystal vase! 1
    • This is my flower that won't die! ☺ It's on a pvc pipe and made out of plates! Check my board for other glass pieces. I have one that has been on our back porch thru all weather and has never tipped or blown over.

I too am an admitted glass-gluing addict! It is just so much fun.
    • Cobalt blue totem. I just need a pretty flower bed for it to sit in. Glass repurposed and assembled by Nita Hooper.

How is the silicone holding up for you? I live in California and have the extreme heat and cold. The first rain my silicone gave out & it was suppose to be waterproof. I'm now trying Gorilla glue. What glue has work for others? I just started making glass projects flowers and a butterfly bath. I totally agree that it's addicting every time my husband and I are out at the flea markets/yard sales I'm looking for new bowls, vases, etc... to start the next project.

Tammy Brenner - I use GE II for windows and doors, and it's fine. Every one that I've made has been outdoors for 3-4 years with no problem. I have 4 and my friend has 3 that I've made. Perhaps you got a bad tube if you used GE II . I'm sure others have had success with other products, but I will always use this product for my outdoor glassware. Good luck! have fun!

Does the glue yellow at all in the sun? I made one using an epoxy that was supposed to stay clear and it yellowed, ruining the look of my totem. :( I have a lot of glass pieces and would love to find the right glue because it is so much fun!

Carol C - My GE Silicone II for windows and doors looks exactly the same as it did 3 years ago. No changes, and has held up through heat and cold. :)

I have also made so many of these that I have started selling them at crat fairs. I put solar lights in or on mine. To amke sure that they don't fall over make to bottom large enough and heavy enough. I agree with the glue - GE Silicone II.

Ya I do get people who say - These go outside - what about hail, little boys, etc. I try to tell them that I have the same weather and family too. They sell best at outdoor craft shows/ flea markets. Lately I've sold solar patio jars, too.
    • This one has an angel inside and a solar light in the bottom and top.

Just now and now I know what I can use the purple glass lid I found. Bird bath! Now I have to get more glass as I donated all my not so-special-stuff I received over the years last year when cleaning out some cabinets.

Tammy Brenner gail--My Repurposed Life I also use GE11silicone clear..we have VERY hot summers, and pretty darn cold winters. My bowling balls with half marbles stood the test of time all winters and summers long. Finally after 4 years or so, some of them started falling off, not a big deal. The bowling balls themselves get really hot in the sun. I also use ...»
the silicone on my cd spinners on which I glue half marbles, you can find my posts and pictures, they have been outside in all weather for years! Maybe you didn't use enough for a good seal? Gail, KellyKelly S (sigh) I found more glass ware at a yard sale today! It was hard pickings tho, like maybe someone got the inside scoop and is keeping all their cool glass ware. but much cheaper than goodwill. My friend went with me, she has a whole hutch FILLED with glass ware, she looked at me suspiciously, like why am I bringing her along for the ride?

Bernice H Yard sales are THE best for glassware. Thrift stores are too high. I'm in need of some for an upcoming project (terrariums) I searched through my stash and I don't have anything doable. I do NOT want to start hunting glassware, it's too addictive!

Addictive is right. I used the E6000 on my metal ones and the flowers came of the spoon, not enough glue or maybe too much and it didn't cure? Anyway I do have a drill and drill bits so I'm going shopping in the garage for nuts and bolts tomorrow. I'll check out a few garage sales in the area also. I only allow myself to buy the "sale" tag color stuff at Goodwill for my crafting. Each week a different colored tag is 50% off.

Kelly S I haven't used E6000, so I really don't know. I have drilled china for teacup lamps... it's not easy on the drill. color tag sale at Goodwill.... NEVER in my area, EVER! no sales. how sad is that. There's a great junk store I want to go to tomorrow... but thinking they might not be open because of the KY Derby. hope you find good stuff!

The 2 in my area have a different color each week. That way merchandise doesn't hang around forever. If it's not gone in 3 weeks then 1/2 off. Woohoo. I wait until it's 1/2 off unless I absolutely positively have to have it. Yes it may not be there when it's color comes around, but oh well, something else will be.

the good yard sale stuff is usually gone by Saturday. I've often thought about making my own 3 day weekend and spend Friday going sale shopping. Sounds like a plan for June, but then we might get furlough days and then I won't have to burn leave.
