  • This depends upon your budget and family life style. Paint is the most inexpensive way to make cement look good, but the cement itself needs to be in great shape in order to pull that off. Carpet is also a great way to warm up the room, however if your family suffers from allergies or the floor looks as though there has been damp spots, I would stay away from that. Tile can be classic but cold. Heat tapes can be placed in front of where couches and chairs are located to keep your feet warm in colder months. Larger area rugs will also keep the floor warm and are easy to remove and have professionally cleaned when soiled. Lastly is wood flooring. A good quality wood floor, ideally a solid type not laminate works best. It can be glued down, sanded and finished. It will last a lifetime and if properly finished its durable and warm.

I vote for painting. We painted a high travel concrete floor which leads to our back door and it has held up wonderfully. No wearing; no facing. Looks like it was just done. And the texture of the concrete really makes it look like tile. If you want more info, let me know. The best part is you can always redo it with wood, tile or simply paint over it! Good luck.

Do a moisture test before you decide to do anything! You might want to paint around the edges of the room (like a border) and then get a very large rug to go in the room. A synthetic fiber will wear well with kids and pets and can be taken outside and washed. We have a slanting driveway and it is great to leave the cleaned rug lying out to drain and dry. Placing it over railing of deck and letting rain clean it will make it smell really fresh! Anything to hold it up will work.
  • I say go with paint and add an area rug to warm up the space. Good luck!

Yes, we are on a budget. I do like the thought of painting the floor.

Does anyone have any good ideas as to ways or styles, or patterns on painting concrete floors ?

Kathy how did you get that effect?

I just kept blotching with sponges, roller and brush. The more times you layer, the better it looks.

I would add a colorful veery pllush or sculptured area rug to the floor.
